Biography

This memorial website was set up by the friends and colleagues at Philips Healthcare.  We invite you to share your condolensces, stories and thoughts on the memory wall as a gift to his family.

It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend and colleague Stefan Ernst Fischer, Ph.D., at age 47. Stefan leaves his wife, Elisabeth, and two sons, Ramon and Urs, to mourn his passing. Stefan was born and raised in Bern, Switzerland where he attended elementary to high school.  After graduation, Stefan joined the Swiss Army where he rose to the rank of Captain of the Swiss Army Tank Forces.  Following his army duties, Stefan studied Electrical Engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland while doing research at the Brain Research Institute at the University of Zurich.  Stefan completed his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at ETH in 1994, after which he joined Philips Medical Systems as a clinical scientist posted in Andover, MA for the first year and at Washington University in St. Louis, MO until 2000.  After leaving St. Louis, Stefan transitioned to an MR Senior System Architect position in Best, The Netherlands. Since 2003, he was the Director of MR Clinical Science North-America for Philips Healthcare in Cleveland, OH.  In this position, Stefan headed a team of 20 Ph.D. level scientists and supported clinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging and spectroscopy research at leading Research and Healthcare Institutions in North America.

Since the move to Cleveland, Stefan continued his passion for teaching in addition to his managerial duties.  In 2004, he initiated the first Sequence Development Mode and Pulse Programming courses taught in North America, and to date has successfully trained a network of more than 250 Philips collaborators.  In 2007, Stefan was appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor of the Department of Radiology at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and more recently had been offered an adjunct faculty position in the Bioengineering Department at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. Stefan mentored a countless number of students to successful careers within Philips MR and Academic positions.

The innovative contributions that Stefan made to Philips MR, as well as the international MR scientific community, are far too numerous to list.  His legacy is reflected in multiple technical developments that have become integral to the Philips MR systems found around the world today.  Among these, he was the chief designer for the new digital MR platform on the Achieva system, commercially known as the FreeWave Spectrometer, and was awarded a patent for his invention on Vectorcardiograph-based cardiac triggering, which allowed Philips MR to take an early lead in cardiac MR, and is still sold on state-of-the-art MR systems.  Academically, Stefan has authored 3 patents, numerous invention disclosures, and over 30 peer-reviewed publications/book chapters and contributed over 100 papers and invited lectures to scientific meetings.

Stefan will be remembered for these incredible accomplishments, but even more so for his clever teaching style and unique explanations of incredibly complex concepts.  His comparison of a perfectly brewed espresso to an inversion-recovery pulse sequence, although not intuitive, could not have been more precise.  And he taught all of the students not to make things up, and to simply admit when he or she didn't understand a concept.  When needed, he gently reinforced this lesson by subtly asking a series of leading questions, thereby guiding the student to discover the solution and garner a better understanding.

His teaching style and competitive spirit was evident in his favorite hobbies and pastimes, in particular, hockey, but also golf, volleyball, and more recently, mountain biking.  His intense love of hockey started in Bern, as a fan of SC Bern and as a player on the local teams. He developed a philosophy of the game that included a meticulous flow chart of patterns and plays, which worked triumphantly as a blueprint for the pee-wee hockey team he coached to a state championship in 2009.  His family shared his love of hockey, and he enjoyed watching and coaching his sons on the ice.

Stefan will be deeply missed and continuously remembered.  Outside of his work at Philips, his legacy will be carried on by his son Ramon, who will begin studies in Civil Engineering at the University of Cincinnati this fall, and his son Urs, who will begin his higher education after high school graduation in 2013.  To ease the cost of tuition and other financial burdens on Stefan's immediate family, donations can be made to the Stefan Fischer Benevolent Fund at any Key Bank or via an electronic fund.  Please visit the memorial website for further information and to leave a condolence message for Stefan's family and friends: www.stefanfischer.remembered.com.

Elisabeth, Ramon and Urs,

Paul and I send our deepest condolences and will continue to keep all of you in our thoughts and prayers. We shared so many special memories as our boys buzzed around the rinks and Stefan was a very special part of that and always ever so patient and helpful. It was only earlier this summer that I had the opportunity to catch up with Stefan at Cleveland airport of all places. We shared family updates as we obediently marched through the security line (happily neither of us receiving extra security frisking). If there is any way we can be helpful to you we are only around the corner. (written by Babette).

Elisabeth, Ramon and Urs,

Brenda and I are deeply sorry for your loss. You are in our prayers. We both have very fond memories of your family and the great Pee Wee season we had together in Shaker. I remember immediately liking Stefan when we met and was even more delighted as I had the opportunity to meet the rest of your wonderful family. Stefan was one of the truly gifted coaches that had the love of the sport, incredible knowledge and, more importantly, a patience and fairness with the players that most coaches can only hope for. Again, our thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time.

Stefan ... such a good person. Am exceptional MR scientist/engineer who was ready to answer questions and help others. We met at Washington University/St. Louis - we both had an interest in MR tagging but did not collaborate until years later when I moved to Louisville. We lost touch until 2 years ago - when we reconnected, you proudly told me about your family and your son's accomplishments. I am glad that we finally had the opportunity to collaborate (on MR tagging and other topics as well) during this past year - my students always admiring your detailed knowledge of the Philips platform and your readiness to help despite a genuine lack of time. We will be publishing a few papers based on joint work and I will be proud to have you on my list of co-authors. We talked in early June, 2011. It was such a shock to have been told of your passing away. So untimely, so soon. You will be sorely missed. My thoughts are with your family.

Dear Elisabeth, Ramon and Urs, Words cannot express our feelings for you at this time. We just cannot imagine what you are going through. We have discovered from this memorial that there was a lot about Stefan and his work that we did not know. We knew him more as the wonderful hockey coach and family man that made this incredible twisted Swiss bread! We have so many wonderful memories of times our families shared together in Holland. Brenden says he was the best hockey coach he ever had and Brenden has played hockey in three countries for many many teams. We know that Stefan was always principled and beyond fair in his treatment of his players. He cared deeply about hockey.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Please take care.
love,

Stefan - kind and intelligent, a man with an endless amount of good will. Thanks, Stefan, for everything - for the sequence development/pulse programming courses in Cleveland which, thanks to you, were much more than mere professional courses. Thanks for the endless support you gave to the then new MRI center at Boston University, of which I was part. Thanks for your kindness, knowledge and enthusiasm.

Dear Elisabeth, Ramon and Urs, I was saddened to hear of Stefan's transition to the spiritual plane. I heard about it today when I spoke with my sister Tina Tallman. As an ordained spiritualist minister I can tell you that all relationships are eternal and that consciousness and personality survive the change called death. Although Stefan is now non-physical, he is still very much a conscious spirit entity and will continue to be part of your lives as best he can be from the spiritual plane. Don't be surprised if he comes to you in dreams or you hear his voice clairaudiently. The love he has for all of you is still there and living eternally.

Stefan was one of those "smartest guys you've ever met" sort of guys. He was not pretentious, but he was very passionate about his science and his work. I was able to work with him directly for two years @ CCMR/Barnes/Wash Univ, he a clinical scientist, and I, a cardiology fellow. It is a true testament to his teaching ability that he was able to get me to understand CMR/MRI (one of the trickiest sciences). For one brief moment in time, even this simple physician was able to simulate a pulse sequence in his head.

Over the last 16 years, I have been fortunate enough to get to know Stefan and his family. The one thing more important to him than his work was his family. I was able to see him as a wonderful father, and great gentleman.

His passing is a great loss to his family and to the world. I'm a better person by knowing him, and only my regrets are the missed opportunities to be together.

My sincerest condolances to his family. One day we can be together again, maybe then we will be able to measure the gas pressure in that bottle of Guiness with some sort of pulse sequence.

Hi Stefan,
It's so hard to write this - all I can say is I will really miss you- I only saw you a month ago in Cleveland and was so glad we ran into each other - you have been such an inspiration to me throughout my years at Philips. You were not only the bright smart MR guru who explained MR concepts in such a unique easy way to follow, but you were so kind hearted, the most humble credible person I have ever met, who brought with him so much energy. You were so generous with me in sharing your knowledge and time to make us successful.I will terribly miss you - I enjoyed working with you professionally and knowing you personally. I will always remember you. I will miss saying Happy Birthday to you this coming week on our shared birthday, and pray that you are in a much restful peaceful place. Thank you Stefan for everything. Stefan;
I will fondly remember you as an honest man, THE resource I relied on to navigate the intricacies of your system, and fellow hockey dad/coach that would rather talk about their sons’ play than pulse sequences. You were the intersection of so many topics/projects/ideas where my colleagues and I would surmise – “let’s ask Stefan, … he’ll know”. Thank you for all you have done for us at the Univ of Michigan, my fellow Philips MR uses, and the international MR community overall. You have had a profound impact on our field and will be sorely missed.

Crossing the path of Stefan the first time felt so natural to me, that I hardly noticed. The second time I was overrun by his directness and honesty in every aspect of work and life.
Over the years we shared our passions for the big toy and helped eachother understanding the company Philips.
Stefan is one of those rare generalists that make Philips Healthcare unique.
I doubt we can afford to loose him.
Being a modest man Stefan probably disagrees with me this time.
Dear Elisabeth, Ramon and Urs accept my condolences.
Be assured that there are many that feel proud to have known him.

I will remember Stefan not only for the excellent technical work he did in MR, but for way he always took time to have a friendly chat even when he was busy. Whenever I would see him at conferences, he would stop and ask how things were going even though I did not work much with Philips much anymore. We would chat about his kids playing Hockey and my kids playing soccer, and maybe finally get around to some science talk. He was one of the good guys...he will be missed. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and co-workers.

I had met Stefan only recently at a pulse programming course in Cleveland. In that time I had come to like Stefan tremendously.
His knowledge and experience in MRI and his capacity for teaching were remarkable. I was so impressed that such a senior person took the time to spend so much time with us who were there to learn the basics. That experience has had a lasting effect on me, and what I learnt from Stefan will be a huge assest to me for the rest of my career.
It was also on a personal level that Stefan made an impression. I enjoyed his sense of humour, which made work fun. The social events that Stefan organised were great fun, and planned with care. I feel he enjoyed the Rock 'n Roll museum tremendously. And I enjoyed it all the more knowing it was something he was interested in.

I am so saddened for the loss. My thoughts are with his family.

My MR Mentor Stefan Fischer

God stole a soul today
A gift that he gave us in so many ways
True legacies that we think we leave behind
Are very average compared to his kind

His was an undeniable talent
That always met the challenge
Of where we worked called MRI

Through his work he touched us all
He created so many ideas that showed
That passion and learning extends us forward
So it was that he rose to that challenge for us all

So it was that we were lucky
To have known Stefan for a fleeting time
But as usual we don’t realize till we loose
The gift that he was and left behind

Yet in all this magical MR knowledge
Lived a man who loved life
Who joked and sung with us
And the hard rock music that showed his wilder side

He was a pearl that influenced my beliefs
A true priceless present of the human kind
God stole his gift back from us
A human being again of which we will never find

Stefan,

I was shocked when I heared about your sudden death. I remember the good times that we were room mates and you learned me the art of system architecting and MR.

Your knowledge and drive to inspire and teach others was unsurpassed. I have many fine memories of the times that we worked together in the Systems Group of MR in Best.

You were not only passionate for work but also for your family, friends and colleagues. I clearly remember one of the ideas you had to promote MR using a special version of a Monopoly game. What especially kept with me was your remark: "No better way to promote Philips as to provide our customers with means to spent valuable family time together". This was not only referring to the game, but also to the many lives you helped save with your contributions to the MR community.

Thanks for everything that you gave.....

My thoughts are with your family right now that will have to continue without their loving father and husband. No more marker pins will be added to the map on which you recorded all your travels now you've started your final one. Hope they have good expresso on the way.

You will always remain in my memorie as a wonderful and inspiring person.

Stefan,

You were simply a great human being! It is truly tragic that you were taken away from us with still so much to give. We first met around the year 2000-2001 when you moved to Best to join the System Design group. I already knew of your work at the ETH and Barnes-Jewish and had no doubt about the kind of a high caliber scientist and innovator you were. Your knowledge, confidence and professionalism was second to none. Your sheer intelligence and the speed with which you were able to summarize the pros and cons in every situation was a pleasure to encounter.

Stefan, you taught my daughter to ice skate. Still clear in my head is the time we went together to the ice stadium in Endhoven and I marveled at the sight of my (then) tiny daughter skating across the ice with a group of ice hockey players! We saw how good you were with the kids. We saw your passion for the game. We saw you in your element!

We enjoyed the family gatherings. I remember the warmth of your family. The generosity, the great food and some of the best coffee I ever tasted.

I remember feeling that something was missing when you left Best to take up your new role as head of Clinical Science in the U.S. It was some consolation that we were still on the same Philips team.

We met for the last time only a few weeks ago at the MR Leadership days. It was good to be on the same team for the business game. Even though we didn’t win the game, we still designed the best and most cost effective airplanes. Stefan, you were the kind of person I would always want in any team I was in.

It is unthinkable that such a capable, kind and accomplished person was taken away so young. Undoubtedly your personal contributions to the world of MRI and healthcare have saved lives. The history of your short time on this planet is written in the journals, the patents and in the hearts and minds of the people you knew. Through our memories and your legacy of contributions, the future will know what a truly great person you were.
